A Bookworm's Diet
It has been 9 months or so since I posted an update on the books I have been devouring. So here goes :-
- Snow by Orhan Pamuk - Melancholic novel, beautiful prose.
- Foucault's Pendulum† by Umberto Eco - Complex and heavy, but very well written.
- The Remains of the Day† by Kazuo Ishiguro - Short novel about an English butler whose initial denial of his late master's Nazi sympathies slowly changes to resigned acceptance of the fact.
- Life of Pi† by Yann Martel - One of the best books I have ever read. Partly inspired by the Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar's book Max and the Cats.
- Istanbul : Memories and the city by Orhan Pamuk - Autobiographical. Heavy dose of vintage black bile distilled from Pamuk's own backyard. The black and white photos add to the effect. Istanbul is one place I must visit.
- Phantoms in the Brain by V S Ramachandran - Sheds light on some of the mysteries of the brain in a simple, easy to understand manner.
- Love and longing in Bombay† by Vikram Chandra - A collection of short stories. Engrossing read.
- City of Djinns† by William Dalrymple - Delhi's past and present woven into a beautiful travelogue. Highly recommended.
- The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald - Widely regarded as "The Great American Novel". I tend to agree.
Currently reading The Age of Kali† by William Dalrymple.
† I bought these books from Landmark, using coupons given by my erstwhile employer for a host of reasons.
